New band – Tennis

This band is a married couple who saved up their money, bought a sail boat and sailed around the East Coast for 8 months. Their upcoming release includes songs they wrote while sailing. “Marathon” is kind of a fluffy yet raw piece of pop sensation.

Cool new music from Magic Kids

Magic Kids is a band from Memphis that sounds like it’s from the sun-drenched Southern California Beach Boys pop sensibilities with the energy of Orange County punk without the angst. String arrangements fly in these two very cool songs. It feels good to feel positive. Their debut release, Memphis drops August 24.

Twin Shadows is George Lewis Jr., who I first met when he was playing with Drug Rug. This is way different (George never really wrote songs w/ Drug Rug) – and very cool. Twin Shadow’s is on Terrible Records, the imprint founded by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor.

Jay Z KILLED IT on SNL

To be honest, I’m not the biggest JayZ fan, but I saw him live at the Palladium re-opening a couple yrs ago and his live band is nuts and the show was incredible. He nailed it on SNL this weekend, playing a medley over 8 minutes of both old and new songs.

New Department of Eagles (kind of)

Department of Eagles (assumably because of all the Grizzly Bear hype, which one of their members has since made it wicked big with) is releasing unreleased songs from 2003-2006, apparently recorded in music rooms at NYU. That makes me pretty excited – mainly the NYU part… that place is PRESTIGIOUS.
